For this project, I designed new covers and advertising materials for three classic novels, targeting teenage and younger readers. To spark interest in these older works, I gave each novel a distinct design focus, adding depth and variety to the collection.
Novel Cover #2
For Catch 22 by Joseph Heller, I chose to I chose to take a type-dominated approach throughout the cover and incorporated colors that exuded insanity. I knew I wanted the bomb to be the focus of the piece, so I had the title take the shape of the bomb. The color palette is inspired by WW2 American fighter pilots.
Novel Cover #1
For The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury, I chose to represent Mars with a simple monochromatic illustration to allow the colors to draw the viewer's eye. I felt that having the design have a strong illustrative approach allows for the beauty of Mars to be shown.
Novel Cover #3
For Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, I chose to represent a more novel-accurate depiction of Frankenstein's monster. I wanted to incorporate this because it helps the reader be more immersed in the novel and separates it from the movie depiction. I also added elements of foreshadowing to give interest to the novel while also keeping the plot hidden.
Poster Design
To help promote the new edition of Catch-22, I created a poster that incorporates elements of the novel covers. I chose to have a variety of sizes for the bombs to help show depth and convey a plot point in the novel.
-
I wanted to incorporate an important quote from the novel that helped give a synopsis of the story. I wanted to keep the style similar to the novel but different enough to be set apart.
-
I wanted to expand on the idea of bombs falling with the most important quote from the novel which explains what Catch 22 is.
-
I wanted to take one of the gravestones from the cover and tell more of the story by giving information about Victor Frankensteins’ death, while still keeping the plot hidden.
